Il s&rsquo;agit des lymphocytes T (T pour thymus, car d&rsquo;autres lymphocytes ach\u00e8vent leur maturation dans d&rsquo;autres organes, les lymphocytes B). Cette maturation est rendue possible gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la s\u00e9cr\u00e9tion d&rsquo;hormones qui agissent \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur m\u00eame du thymus et ailleurs dans l&rsquo;organisme.<\/p>\n<p>Son activit\u00e9 et sa taille sont maximales au cours de la pubert\u00e9, avant d&rsquo;involuer \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e2ge adulte. Cette <strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">atrophie du thymus au cours du vieillissement<\/span> <\/strong>entra\u00eene un d\u00e9clin graduel de la production des cellules de d\u00e9fense.
